2021 Virtual Dissection Seminars
All 16:00 - 17:00 GMT on Fridays
Join Karen Kirkness & Joanne Avison for live, online sessions based on regions of interest open to anyone and especially suited to yoga practitioners. Our seminars are informal, semi-academic journeys through the classical anatomy that weave in threads of embryology and classical yoga. We follow the Aims & Objectives set out in the event description but welcome questions and we leave space for spontaneity.
Karen Kirkness, MFA & MSc Human Anatomy, is a passionate yoga practitioner with 20+ years experience. Her teaching is informed by early influences of endurance sports, healing, motherhood and community. She weaves threads of theory, creativity, and self-care into her lively, fascia-aware discussions around anatomy for yoga. Her PhD research at Hull York Medical School revolves around anatomy pedagogy.
Join Karen in exploring Classical and contemporary aspects of anatomy.
Originally an Ashtangi, Karen has made many trips to Mysore since she first studied with Pattabhi Jois in 2003. Her style incorporates power, precision, and fascination with all things nonlinear. She is now an E-RYT 500, YACEP & Senior Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance Professionals. Karen founded Meadowlark Yoga pre-2010 and since then has embraced an inter-lineage approach to yoga. Community building and empowerment through personal growth inspire her continued commitment to yoga and its critical discourse. Karen lives with her husband Simon and their two toddlers in the Scottish Borders.
Joanne is an international teacher of applied structural anatomy for movement and manual practitioners in a variety of fields. She is a professional Structural Integration practitioner, member of IASI (International Association of Structural Integrators) and certified teacher (KMI, Anatomy Trains 1998-2005: Tom Myers’ school) and Director of the Art of Contemporary Yoga Teacher Training, London, UK.
As an advanced Yoga Practitioner and Certified Yoga Therapist, C-IAYT (Certified by International Association of Yoga Therapists), Joanne appreciates the art, craft and science of yoga and body architecture.
Her Master’s Degree in Spiritual Sciences has deepened her understanding of yoga and the philosophy behind it, that relates closely to how the physical body integrates and animates form.
Joanne is also trained in Cranio-Sacral Therapy, continuously working in A.R.T. (Autoimmune Response Testing) and F.S.M. (Frequency Specific Microcurrent) to further her studies in complementary health and complementary medicine. She is also a graduate of the CMED Institute, USA. After over 20 years of manual and movement practice, she appreciates deeply the resonance field(s) the body animates as a living form.
